Background on Eguana – Company History

Sustainable Energy Technologies was established by David and Michael Carten and renamed Eguana Technologies Inc. in September 2013. Eguana Technologies Inc. is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In Europe and North America, Eguana develops, produces, and distributes innovative power inverters for solar photovoltaic systems, small wind turbines, fuel cells, and energy storage. Under the Enduro, Evolve, and Elevate brands, it offers a variety of energy storage solutions for home and business applications.

Eguana Technologies were founded in 1998 and design and manufacture battery energy storage systems. The company reported CA$10.5 million (US$1.65 million) in revenues for the third quarter of 2023, which makes them a smaller player in the global battery market.

Eguana are currently not profitable registering a 4.71M loss in the September 2023 quarter.

In their Australian offering, the Eguana Technologies solution packages either LG Chem or Pylontech battery modules with their proprietary bi-directional inverters to provide their customers with an end-to-end solution.

In November 2023 Eguana announced they had launched a Virtual Power Plant in Australia with an electricity utility which was not named. The VPP would offer customers better return on investment on their battery solution while supporting the ancillary services for the partnered utility.

Eguana Technologies offer two battery storage product lines:

  • Enduro
  • Evolve

Each product line combines Eguana’s proprietary power electronics system with either Pylontech or LG Chem battery modules. The Evolve battery is designed for the Australian market while the Enduro series is designed for the European market.

The Evolve solar battery system is offered in different capacities. The largest options include a 42kWh battery capacity with a 14kW inverter (Evolve LFP) and 39kWh battery with a 13kW inverter (Evolve ESS). This effectively creates a “3 hour battery” as the solution can charge or discharge one third of its capacity during an hour.

Eguana Evolve Battery Key Features

Eguana’s battery solutions have a number of key features:

  • The Evolve ESS battery system utilises LG’s Chem battery modules which are one of the leading battery modules on the market with a strong track record
  • Customers can choose between a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry in the Evolve LFP and Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide in the Evolve ESS
  • Eguana’s range of solutions offers flexibility in the inverter and battery capacity sizes ranging from a power rating of 5kW to 14kW (inverter size) and a maximum storage capacity of 42kWh in the LFP series

Eguana Evolve Solar Battery: Warranty Terms

Eguana’s Evolve battery offers a 10 year warranty for Australian customers. This ensures that the solution will be free of manufacturing defects. Pylontech and LG Chem also offer 10 years warranty for their own branded solutions.

Eguana also offers a performance warranty, which assures the battery will retain at least 60% of its usable capacity during 10 years. The 60% maintained capacity after ten years is only applicable if the total energy throughput is less than 19.2 megawatt-hours during the ten years.

This means the Eguana Evolve battery is guaranteed to maintain 60% of its capacity after ten years or 19.2 MWh of energy throughput, whichever comes first.

One concern with the warranty is that the only contact details are in Canada. It is unclear whether Australian customers would be stuck attempting to contact the Canadian head office or whether they would be supported locally.
